Soundproofing mechanisms can be employed in several situations, especially industries notorious for sound pollution mostly attributed to the <strong>use of heavy-duty machinery<\/strong>,<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"> Power Generation plants are part of these.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><em>Noise pollution source in power generation plants<\/em><\/h3>\n<p>There are numerous main sources of noise within a power plant and only a few of the major causes are taken in the exam here.<\/p>\n<p>The sound power level from equipment can spread from about <strong>120 dB to over 155 dB<\/strong> depending on the size and type of machine. There is no easy method to generally categorize one unit as being noisier than another, in fact,<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"> the amount of MWs turbine produce does not directly affect the noise they produce.<\/span> However, diesel engines are more predictable, and generally, the higher the horsepower or kilowatt rating, the higher the noise level because more cylinders and fuel are needed.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Here is a list of some of the common noise source in power plants:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Combustion turbine (CT)<\/li>\n<li>Heat recovery steam generator<\/li>\n<li>Diesel engine<\/li>\n<li>Superchargers on diesel engines<\/li>\n<li>Steam generators, regulators, by-pass and control valves and piping<\/li>\n<li>Air-cooled condensers (ACC)<\/li>\n<li>Cooling towers, produce fan and gearbox noises<\/li>\n<li>Fuel gas pressure regulating, metering and valve stations<\/li>\n<li>Main step-up transformers<\/li>\n<li>Condensate pumps, condenser units, and associated piping<\/li>\n<li>Piping and pipe hangers not acoustically isolated from structures<\/li>\n<li>Blow-off and venting processes<\/li>\n<li>Remote water-pumping stations.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The sound emissions from power generation equipment can be reduced by applying noise control devices.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><em>Sound Field Definition<\/em><\/h3>\n<p>To analyze noise from equipment, <strong>we need to define the sound field<\/strong> \u2013 that is, how the sound will propagate from the equipment or the sources of noise.<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"> Near field, far field, free field, and reverberant field<\/span> are frequently mentioned. These are regions that describe certain characteristics of sound propagation as <em>illustrated in the Figure.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4228\" src=\"https:\/\/stopson.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/soundfields.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"299\" height=\"169\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Descriptions according to ISO 12001:2009<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Near field<\/span><\/em>\n<ul>\n<li>The near field of a source is the region close to a source where the sound pressure and acoustic particle velocity are not in phase.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Far field<\/span><\/em>\n<ul>\n<li>The far field of a source begins where the near field ends and extends to infinity. Note that the transition from near to far field is gradual in the transition region. In the far field, the direct field radiated by most machinery sources will decay at the rate of about 6 dB each time the distance from the source is doubled.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Free field<\/span><\/em>\n<ul>\n<li>The free field is a region in space where sound may propagate free from any form of obstruction.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Reverberant field<\/span><\/em>\n<ul>\n<li>The reverberant field of a source is defined as that part of the sound field radiated by a source that has experienced at least one reflection from a boundary of the room or enclosure containing the source.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><i>Fundamentals of Noise Control<\/i><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Noise control or mitigation involves several steps, and <em>the amount of noise reduction is driven by having to meet an environmental noise limit or some regulatory limit, not to mention workers\u2019 safety.<\/em> A simple model using the classical approach to noise control (shown below) allows the examination of the options for effective and economical noise control:<\/span><\/p>\n<p>source of noise \u2192 path of noise \u2192received noise<\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3><em>Solutions<\/em><\/h3>\n<p>Applying noise control involves affecting one of these three elements. <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Most often it is the \u2018path of noise\u2019 that is controlled by the use of acoustic enclosures, barrier walls, silencers,<\/span> and other similar noise control treatments.
